Events to Easter 1916

Tens of thousands appeared for Dublin’s  funeral of Jerimiah O’Donovan Rossa in August 1915.  Patrick Pearse gave the graveside oration, in which he made it clear that a new course towards Irish independence was pending, and that Home Rule was no longer the option preferred by many throughout Ireland.  While immediate plans for an uprising had to be shelved, the plan for rebellion gathered steam to the end of 1915.  On December 26, the IRB Military Council set Easter Sunday 1916 as the date for the Rising.
