Irish Person of the Year 1990 Emmet Smith

The Irish Person of the Year (IPOY), is the Irish American Society’s annual award to one of its outstanding members. The award recognizes the recipient’s commitment to the promotion of the social and cultural goals not only of the Irish American Society but also of those of other Irish organizations in the area.

The Irish American Society of Dallas has named J. Emmet Smith the Irish Person of the Year.  Last year’s awardee was Herbert Kelleher, President and CEO, of Southwest Airlines.

Mr. Smith has been a long time leader of the Irish community promoting Irish awareness and culture throughout th metroplex area.  He has been active in numerous Irish events including the American Irish Festival, the Rose of Tralee Pageant, and has served as the Chairman of the Dallas St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee.  He was also one of the founders and first president of the Irish American Society, formerly Friendly Sons and Daughters of St. Patrick.

Mr. Smith was born in Oldcastle, County Meath, Ireland, and emigrated to America in 1956.  He is presently associated with the Sun Financial Group, one of the world’s largest financial institutions serving client needs in financial planning for retirement, investing, family protections, and tax shelters.

He and his wife, Liz, reside at Cedar Lake.
